Brisbane to Byron Bay is one of the great short road trips in Australia: a couple of hours down the coast, across the state border and into a town that feels a world away from the city. With a private chauffeur, the drive becomes part of the holiday rather than a chore. Here is how the route works, how long it really takes, and where it is worth pausing on the way.

The route from Brisbane to Byron Bay

The most direct way south is simple. From Brisbane, your chauffeur joins the M1 Pacific Motorway, runs the length of the Gold Coast, crosses into New South Wales near Tweed Heads and continues on the Pacific Highway to the Byron Bay turn-off. The final stretch heads east into town along Ewingsdale Road.

From Brisbane CBD that is around 170 km door to door, depending on where you are staying at each end. The motorway is well maintained and mostly multi-lane, so the journey itself is comfortable. The variables are traffic and how many stops you want to make, which we cover in timing and traffic below.

If you are starting from the airport rather than the city, the first leg uses the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections. Your chauffeur handles all of that, so you can settle in and watch the coastline arrive. If you are only heading as far as the Gold Coast, our guide to Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers covers that shorter run in detail.

Realistic timing and traffic windows

Without stops and in clear conditions, Brisbane CBD to Byron Bay typically takes about two hours. That number is a best case. In practice, the M1 through Logan and the northern Gold Coast is where most delays happen, and the pattern is fairly predictable.

  • Weekday mornings: southbound traffic is usually lighter than northbound, but the motorway around the Logan and Gold Coast interchanges can still slow down.
  • Weekday afternoons: from mid-afternoon into the evening, the M1 gets busy in both directions. Allow extra time if you are leaving after lunch.
  • Friday afternoons: the classic weekend exodus. Plenty of Brisbane residents are heading to the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers at the same time as you.
  • School and public holidays: expect heavier traffic on the coast and slower movement into Byron town centre itself.
  • Roadworks and incidents: the M1 has ongoing upgrade work at times. Your chauffeur checks conditions before departure and adjusts the route where sensible.

Our advice is to leave a buffer rather than chase the shortest possible time. If you have a restaurant booking, a wedding or a check-in time in Byron, tell us and we will plan the pickup time backwards from it.

Felix tip

A late-morning departure from Brisbane often misses the worst of both the morning peak and the afternoon build-up, and gets you into Byron in time for a long lunch.

Crossing the border and daylight saving

Somewhere around Tweed Heads you will leave Queensland and enter New South Wales. On the motorway it is barely noticeable, but there is one practical detail worth knowing: the time can change.

Queensland does not use daylight saving. NSW does, from October to April. During those months, Byron Bay is an hour ahead of Brisbane. A two-hour drive that leaves Brisbane at 10 am will arrive in Byron at around 1 pm local time, not 12 pm.

Good to know

Hotel check-in times, restaurant bookings and wedding ceremonies in Byron are set in NSW time. When you book, tell us the local time you need to arrive and we will work out the Brisbane departure for you.

The same applies if you are flying out of the Gold Coast. Gold Coast Airport sits right on the border at Coolangatta, so it is worth double-checking which time zone your flight times are quoted in. We cover our cross-border QLD to NSW journeys in more detail in our service areas.

The best scenic stops on the way

One of the real advantages of a private transfer is that you decide when to stop. Shuttles and coaches run to a fixed schedule; your chauffeur runs to yours. These are the stops our passengers ask for most often.

Burleigh Heads

About halfway down the Gold Coast, Burleigh Heads has a headland national park, a classic surf break and a strip of cafes facing the beach. It is a short hop off the M1 and an easy place to stretch your legs, grab a coffee and take in one of the best views on the coast. Families with kids who want a bigger Gold Coast day might prefer to save their energy for our Gold Coast theme park transfers on another day.

Tweed Coast and Kingscliff

Once you cross into NSW, you can leave the highway and follow the Tweed Coast Road instead. It is slower, but it runs closer to the water and passes through relaxed beach towns. Kingscliff is the pick of them, with a beachfront promenade, cafes and a calm, unhurried feel. It is an ideal lunch stop.

Brunswick Heads

Just north of Byron, Brunswick Heads is a small river town with a bridge, a beach and a strong local character. It is close enough to Byron that a stop adds very little time, and it is a lovely place to pause before the final few kilometres into town.

Hinterland detours: Bangalow and beyond

If you have a little more time, the Byron hinterland is worth seeing. Bangalow, a short drive inland from Byron, is a heritage village with a main street of cafes, galleries and boutiques. It sits just off the Pacific Highway, so you can visit on the way in and still reach Byron in good time.

Some passengers turn the trip into a full day out: a stop at Burleigh, lunch in Kingscliff, an afternoon wander through Bangalow, then arrival in Byron in the late afternoon. That kind of day suits an hourly or as-directed booking, where the chauffeur stays with you rather than dropping you and leaving.

If country roads, views and a slower pace appeal to you, you may also enjoy our guide to a Tamborine Mountain winery tour, another easy escape from Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Felix tip

Tell us about your stops when you book rather than on the day. It lets us plan the timing properly and makes sure your quote reflects the trip you actually want.

Arriving in Byron Bay

Byron town centre is compact and popular, and on busy days traffic along Ewingsdale Road and through the main streets can move slowly. Parking is also limited. This is where a chauffeur earns their keep: you are dropped at the door of your accommodation, your bags are unloaded, and nobody has to circle the block looking for a space.

Byron and its surrounds offer everything from town-centre apartments to larger resorts and private holiday homes on the outskirts. Some properties sit up private driveways or on quieter roads that are easy to miss. When you book, include the exact address and any access notes, such as gate codes or reception instructions, and your chauffeur will take you right to the door.

From Brisbane Airport vs Brisbane CBD

Many of our Byron passengers are not starting in the city at all. They are landing at Brisbane Airport, often after a long-haul or interstate flight, and want to go straight to Byron without the hassle of hire cars or connecting buses.

  1. From Brisbane Airport: we track your flight details, so if you land early or late, your pickup time moves with you. The route heads south on the Gateway Motorway to join the M1, adding some distance compared with a CBD start. Allow a little over two hours in good conditions.
  2. From Brisbane CBD or inner suburbs: your chauffeur collects you from your home, office or hotel and heads straight onto the motorway. Allow around two hours without stops.
  3. From the Brisbane cruise terminal: if you are coming off a ship, the terminal at Luggage Point is close to the airport. Our guide to Brisbane cruise terminal transfers explains how disembarkation-day pickups work.

If you are flying into the Gold Coast instead, the trip to Byron is much shorter. See our Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay guide to compare the two airports for your trip.

Groups, luggage and choosing a vehicle

Byron trips tend to involve more luggage than a typical city transfer. Surfboards, prams, wedding outfits, golf clubs and a week's worth of beach gear all add up. Choosing the right vehicle at the start avoids any squeeze at the kerb.

  • Executive Audi Sedan: ideal for up to three passengers with standard suitcases. A good fit for couples, business travellers and small families travelling light.
  • Executive Mercedes V-Class: seats up to seven passengers with room for bulky luggage. The natural choice for families, friends heading to a wedding, or groups with boards and extra bags.
  • Child seats: available on request. Let us know the ages of any children when you book so the right seats are fitted before pickup.

You can compare both vehicles in our fleet section. If you are unsure which suits your group, request a quote and mention your luggage; we will recommend the right option.

Hourly days, as-directed bookings and return trips

Not every Byron journey is a straight A to B. We also offer hourly and as-directed bookings, where your chauffeur stays with you for a set period and follows your plans. This works well for:

  • A scenic drive down with several stops, as described in the best scenic stops.
  • Wedding days, where guests need moving between accommodation, ceremony and reception venues.
  • Corporate visits to the Northern Rivers with meetings in more than one location.
  • A hinterland day out from Byron, taking in Bangalow and the surrounding villages.

Return trips are just as easy. Many passengers book Brisbane to Byron and Byron back to Brisbane Airport together, so the departure is sorted before the holiday even starts. Remember the time difference in summer: if your flight leaves Brisbane at a given Queensland time, your Byron pickup needs to account for the extra hour. You can book your return to Brisbane Airport at the same time as your outbound trip. Find out more about the full range of chauffeur services we offer.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

How long does a private transfer from Brisbane to Byron Bay take?

From Brisbane CBD the drive is typically around two hours without stops, covering roughly 170 km. Peak-hour traffic on the M1, Friday afternoons and school holidays can add time, so we plan pickups with a buffer.

Can you pick me up from Brisbane Airport and drive straight to Byron Bay?

Yes. We track your flight details and meet you on arrival, then head south via the Gateway Motorway and M1. Allow a little longer than the CBD departure because of the extra distance from the airport.

Can we stop along the way?

Yes. A private transfer can include short stops at places like Burleigh Heads, Kingscliff, Brunswick Heads or Bangalow. Let us know when you book so the timing and quote reflect the stops you want.

Do I need to worry about the time difference in Byron Bay?

From October to April, NSW observes daylight saving and Queensland does not, so Byron Bay is an hour ahead of Brisbane. Check your accommodation check-in time in NSW time and we will plan the pickup around it.

Which vehicle should I choose for a group?

The Executive Audi Sedan suits up to three passengers with standard luggage. For families, friends or groups of up to seven, or anyone travelling with surfboards or extra bags, the Executive Mercedes V-Class is the better choice.
