  • Friday afternoons and the start of school holidays are the busiest times to head south on the M1.
  • For weddings, an hourly booking in the Mercedes van can move guests between accommodation, ceremony and reception.

For Brisbane locals, the Gold Coast is the easy escape: a weekend by the beach, a family holiday, a friend's wedding, a concert or a long lunch with an ocean view. The drive south is short, but it is also the drive everybody else is making on a Friday afternoon. Here is how to plan it so the holiday starts when you leave home, not when you finally find a car park.

Which Gold Coast are you heading to?

"The Gold Coast" covers a long strip of coastline, from the northern canals and resorts down to the border at Coolangatta, plus a green hinterland behind it. The drive from Brisbane varies with where you are going, so it helps to be specific from the start.

Times are approximate and assume clear conditions. When you book, give us the exact address and your chauffeur will plan the route from there. If you are travelling the other way for work, our Gold Coast to Brisbane City guide covers the northbound run.

When to leave Brisbane

From the CBD, your chauffeur heads south through the inner suburbs and joins the M1 Pacific Motorway, which runs all the way down the coast. Most of the drive is on the motorway, and in light traffic it is a comfortable, uneventful hour.

The timing of your departure makes far more difference than the route. These are the windows to think about:

  • Friday afternoons: the classic weekend exodus. If you can leave earlier in the day, or after the evening rush has cleared, the drive is usually much calmer.
  • Saturday mornings: often a good compromise for weekend stays, with lighter traffic than Friday evening.
  • The start of school holidays: expect busier roads and busier hotel lobbies at the other end.
  • Event days: major events on the Gold Coast bring extra traffic into the event precinct, not just the motorway.
Felix tip

If you have a hotel check-in time, a dinner reservation or a ceremony to make, tell us the time you need to arrive and we will work backwards. On a Friday, we will suggest a buffer that may feel generous until you see the traffic.

Pickups from city apartments and inner suburbs

Many Brisbane passengers live or stay in inner-city apartments, where getting out of the building is half the journey. A few details make the pickup smooth:

  • Building name and entrance: tell us which street the lobby faces and whether there is a driveway or set-down area.
  • Luggage plans: if you are bringing several bags down in a lift, let us know so your chauffeur is ready to help at the door.
  • Hotel pickups: include the hotel name and your booking name so your chauffeur can meet you in the lobby.
  • Office pickups: heading straight from work on a Friday? Give us the building address and a contact number.

If you are starting from Brisbane Airport instead, perhaps after a flight home, our Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers guide covers flight tracking and meeting arrangements.

Family holidays without the car-park shuffle

Gold Coast family holidays usually involve a lot of gear. Suitcases, beach bags, a pram, perhaps a portable cot and the children's favourite things for the week. Loading it all into the family car, driving an hour, then finding hotel parking that fits a large vehicle is not how anyone wants to start a holiday.

The Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven passengers with room for luggage, and child seats are available on request. Tell us the children's ages when you book so the right seats are fitted before pickup. Arrival is at the hotel's front entrance, with bags unloaded at the door.

Many families plan their holiday around the theme parks. Our guide to Gold Coast theme park transfers explains how to get to the parks once you are settled. And if you are staying on the northern Gold Coast and flying out at the end, the Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island to Brisbane Airport guide covers that shorter trip.

Gold Coast weddings: getting guests there and home

The Gold Coast and its hinterland host a great many weddings, from beachfront ceremonies to rainforest venues and resort ballrooms. For Brisbane guests, the question is always how to get there, how to move between ceremony and reception, and how to get home without anyone needing to drive.

There are a few common ways couples and guests use a private chauffeur:

  1. Guest transfers from Brisbane: a group of up to seven travels down together in the Mercedes van, arriving dressed and ready.
  2. Hourly wedding-day bookings: the chauffeur stays for a set period, moving the couple, family or guests between accommodation, ceremony, photos and reception.
  3. Late-night returns: guests staying in Brisbane are collected at the end of the night and driven home.
  4. Next-day transfers: a relaxed trip back to Brisbane, or on to the airport, after the celebrations.
Good to know

Wedding venues in the hinterland can have narrow roads, steep driveways and limited signage. Send us the venue's own directions and any access notes when you book, and confirm the ceremony and reception times with the venue so the plan holds together on the day.

Weddings further south, in Byron Bay or along the Tweed, follow similar principles with a longer drive and a possible time difference in summer. See our Brisbane to Byron Bay guide for that trip.

Event nights and long lunches

Concerts, sporting events, the races and festivals regularly draw Brisbane crowds to the Gold Coast. So do long lunches by the beach and dinners in Broadbeach and Burleigh. All of these have something in common: they end with someone needing to drive an hour home, usually late and often after a drink.

A return or hourly booking solves that neatly. Your chauffeur drops you at the venue and either waits or returns at an agreed time. Agree a pickup point a short walk from the venue entrance, because the kerb right outside often gets crowded or closed when an event finishes. We do not hold event schedules, so check finish times with the venue.

Planning a big day out?

Return and hourly bookings mean nobody has to drive home.

Adding the hinterland or a stop on the way

A private transfer does not have to go directly from door to door. Stops are available on request, and the drive south passes close to some lovely detours. Tamborine Mountain sits inland from the M1 between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and makes an easy half-day of wineries, galleries and views before you continue to the coast. Our Tamborine Mountain winery tour guide explains how that day works.

If you would rather keep going past the Gold Coast, the coast road continues to the Tweed and Northern Rivers. Our Gold Coast to Byron Bay guide covers that stretch. Let us know about stops when you book, so the timing and your quote reflect the day you have in mind, and see our area guide above for a sense of the distances.

Sedan or van for the drive south?

The right vehicle depends less on the distance and more on who is travelling and what they are bringing. Weekend bags for two are a very different load from a family's holiday luggage or a wedding party's outfits and gifts.

  • Executive Audi Sedan: up to three passengers with standard luggage. A good fit for couples heading down for a weekend, or a small group going to dinner or an event.
  • Executive Mercedes V-Class: up to seven passengers, with room for suitcases, prams, golf clubs and garment bags. The natural choice for families, groups of friends and wedding guests travelling together.

A useful rule of thumb: if you are wondering whether everything will fit in the sedan, book the van. Arriving with bags on laps is not the start anyone wants. For weddings with more than seven guests, mention your numbers and we can talk through how best to plan the trips, as described in the weddings section above.

You can compare both vehicles in our fleet section, and regular travellers can keep track of upcoming trips through our apps. If you are not sure which suits your group, add a note about passengers and luggage when you request a quote and we will recommend one.

Planning the trip home

The best time to book your return is when you book the trip down. You will know roughly when you need to be back in Brisbane, and it is one less thing to think about while you are away. Sunday afternoons are typically busy heading north, especially at the end of school holidays, so consider a morning departure if your plans allow.

If your weekend ends with a flight rather than a drive home, it may make sense to go straight from the coast to the airport. Our guides to Gold Coast to Brisbane Airport transfers and Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach to Brisbane Airport explain how to time that run. Leaving on a cruise instead? Booking your Brisbane City to Gold Coast transfer

To book your transfer, enter your Brisbane pickup address, your Gold Coast destination, passenger numbers and any child seats, stops or luggage notes. For weddings and events, include the venue and the times you need to arrive and leave. You can also get an instant quote first; a quote is not a confirmed booking until you complete the booking form.

Compare our vehicles in the fleet section, browse our destinations and the full range of chauffeur services, or read our reviews. Common questions are answered in the main FAQ. Then all that is left is to pack, lock the door and let the coast come to you.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Brisbane CBD to the Gold Coast?

To Surfers Paradise, the drive is typically around an hour without traffic, covering roughly 75 to 80 km. Northern Gold Coast areas are a little closer and the southern end of the coast is further, and Friday afternoon traffic can add considerable time.

Can you collect us from an apartment or home in the inner suburbs?

Yes. We collect from homes, apartments, hotels and offices across Brisbane. Include the building name, entrance and any access notes when you book.

Do you provide transfers for wedding guests on the Gold Coast?

Yes. Hourly or as-directed bookings work well for weddings, moving guests between accommodation, ceremony and reception. The Mercedes van seats up to seven passengers per trip.

Can we stop on the way to the Gold Coast?

Yes. Stops are available on request. Let us know when you book so the timing and quote reflect the trip you want.

Can I book the return trip at the same time?

Yes, and many passengers do. Book both legs together and tell us your preferred pickup time for the trip back to Brisbane, or to the airport if you are flying out.
