- Frequently asked questions
- Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island are typically the quickest part of the Gold Coast to reach Brisbane Airport from, at around 50 to 55 minutes without traffic.
- Many properties in the area sit behind security gates, so access details in your booking keep the pickup smooth.
- Golf bags, boat gear and resort luggage are easiest in the Mercedes van, even for a small group.
- A shorter drive still deserves a traffic buffer, because the M1 north of the Gold Coast can slow at peak times.
Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island sit at the quieter, northern end of the Gold Coast, among canals, marinas and fairways. They are also the part of the coast closest to Brisbane Airport. That short head start makes a real difference on departure day, but only if the pickup itself goes smoothly. Gated estates, resort lobbies, golf bags and boat guests all bring their own small details, and this guide covers each of them.
Why this is the shortest Gold Coast run
Most of the Gold Coast stretches south along the beaches, away from Brisbane. Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island sit inland and to the north, close to the M1 Pacific Motorway. From here, your chauffeur is on the motorway within minutes and heading towards Brisbane, rather than first working north through the busy coastal strip.
Here is how the northern resorts compare with other parts of the coast. These figures are approximate and assume clear conditions.
| Starting point | Approx. distance to Brisbane Airport | Typical drive without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Sanctuary Cove / Hope Island | Around 60–70 km | About 50–55 min |
| Surfers Paradise / Broadbeach | Around 80–95 km | About 1 hr 05–1 hr 15 |
| Coolangatta | Around 105–110 km | About 1 hr 20–1 hr 25 |
If you are staying in the high-rise centre of the coast instead, our guide to Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach to Brisbane Airport covers that trip. From the far south, see the Coolangatta to Brisbane Airport guide. For a general overview of the whole coast, read Gold Coast to Brisbane Airport transfers.
Timing your departure
A shorter drive does not mean you can leave things to the last minute. The route north still uses the M1 and then the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, and both carry heavy commuter traffic on weekdays. The stretch towards Logan and the Gateway interchange is where delays are most likely.
When we suggest a pickup time, we start from your airline's advice on when to be at the terminal, add the drive, then add a buffer for the time of day:
- Early morning flights: the motorway is usually quiet before dawn, so the drive tends to be at the quicker end of the range.
- Weekday morning peak: northbound traffic builds steadily. Allow a generous buffer.
- Late morning to early afternoon: often the most predictable window, though never guaranteed.
- Late afternoon: the evening build-up affects the Gateway and the airport approach. Leave earlier than the bare drive time suggests.
Brisbane Airport has separate domestic and international terminals. Include your flight number when you book and your chauffeur will take you to the right one. International departures generally need an earlier arrival than domestic flights, so check your airline's recommendation.
Because the drive is shorter, it is tempting to cut the buffer too fine. Use the time you save to have a relaxed breakfast or a final coffee at the marina, not to leave at the last possible minute.
Private door-to-door transfer from your resort, estate or marina.
Gated estates and private residences
Much of the residential area around Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island is made up of private estates, and many of them have controlled entry. Some use a boom gate with a security office, others an intercom or a residents' code. Waterfront streets can also loop and wind in ways that confuse map apps.
Your chauffeur can come right to your door, provided the booking includes what they need:
- Your full street address, including the estate name.
- Gate instructions: whether to stop at security, call you on arrival or use an intercom.
- A mobile number that will be answered on the morning of departure.
- Any landmarks that help, such as a corner, a driveway colour or a house name.
If you would rather not share gate details, simply ask to be met at the main entrance. Many residents prefer to have their bags brought out to the estate gate, especially for very early departures when they do not want a car at the door before dawn.
Never send door codes or alarm codes. If an estate needs a visitor to be registered with security in advance, the resident usually arranges that directly with the estate. Your chauffeur only needs to know how to get to your front door or meeting point.
Resort and hotel pickups
Visitors to the area often stay at resort hotels with a main lobby and driveway. These are the simplest pickups of all: your chauffeur waits at the front entrance, the porter can bring your bags to the car, and you leave straight from the door.
A couple of points make resort departures easier. Check out the evening before if your flight is early, or leave enough time in the morning for the front desk. Tell us your booking name and the room or villa if the resort has several buildings. And if you have been at a conference or event at the resort, let us know if colleagues are travelling with you so we can choose the right vehicle.
If your flight is late in the day, ask the resort whether they can hold your bags after checkout. That leaves you free for a final round, a swim or a long lunch, with your chauffeur collecting both you and the luggage from the front entrance at the agreed time.
Corporate groups often arrive at northern Gold Coast resorts for retreats and conferences. Our Gold Coast to Brisbane City guide covers hourly bookings if part of your stay involves meetings in Brisbane.
Golf bags and sports gear
Golf is one of the main reasons people visit this part of the coast, and golf bags are one of the most common luggage questions we get. They are long, bulky and not easy to fit alongside suitcases.
- One golfer travelling light: a golf bag plus a small suitcase may fit in the Executive Audi Sedan. Tell us the bag type so we can check.
- Two or more golfers: the Executive Mercedes V-Class is the right choice. It seats up to seven and has room for several golf bags and luggage together.
- Travel cases: hard golf travel cases are larger than soft carry bags, so mention them specifically.
The same applies to fishing gear, diving equipment and anything else that comes with a coastal holiday. It is always easier to choose the larger vehicle at booking than to discover on the morning of your flight that the clubs will not fit. You can compare both vehicles in our fleet section.
Marina and boat guests
The marinas here bring a different kind of traveller: people arriving or leaving by boat, crew changing over, and guests joining a vessel for a few days. Marina pickups have their own rhythm, and the main challenge is finding each other in a busy precinct.
Agree a clear meeting point in advance, such as the marina office, a named cafe or a particular car park entrance. Include the vessel name if that helps, and keep your phone on as the boat comes in. If you are arriving by boat with a firm flight to catch, build in extra margin, because docking and unloading rarely run to the minute.
If your trip involves a cruise ship rather than a private vessel, Brisbane's cruise terminal is a separate trip with its own logistics. See our Brisbane cruise terminal transfers guide.
The Mercedes van seats up to seven with room for clubs and cases.
Families, groups and pre-dawn starts
Northern Gold Coast holidays are often family affairs: grandparents in a waterfront rental, cousins in the villa next door, children who have spent a week in the pool. Getting everyone to the airport together, on time and in a good mood, takes a little planning.
These habits help departure mornings run smoothly:
- Pack and weigh bags the night before, so there are no surprises at check-in.
- Request child seats when you book, with the children's ages, so the right seats are fitted before your chauffeur arrives.
- Keep one bag for the car: snacks, water, chargers and anything the children need for the drive.
- Do a final walk-through of the house or villa for passports, phones and the inevitable forgotten swimsuit.
Pre-dawn pickups in quiet residential streets deserve a little extra thought. If you would rather your chauffeur did not knock or ring, ask them to message on arrival instead, and make sure the gate arrangements from the gated estates section are clear in the booking. Early and late flights are available by arrangement, so book ahead rather than the night before.
For larger family groups, one Mercedes van carries up to seven passengers. If your party is bigger than that, mention it when you request a quote so we can plan accordingly. You can also browse our destinations if the family is spreading out across the region after the holiday.
Coming back: arrivals and return trips
Many residents and regular visitors book both directions together. On arrival at Brisbane Airport, we track your flight details, so an early or delayed landing does not leave anyone waiting in the wrong place. Your chauffeur meets you and drives you back up the coast, with the same gate and access details used for your departure.
Our Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers guide explains how airport meetings work. If your holiday also includes a day at the nearby theme parks, see Gold Coast theme park transfers; the parks are close to this end of the coast. A hinterland afternoon is close too, as our Tamborine Mountain winery tour guide explains.
And for residents heading further afield, our guide to Gold Coast to Noosa covers the longer drive north to the Sunshine Coast. Use the distance table above as a reminder of how much quicker the northern resorts are for any trip towards Brisbane.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Sanctuary Cove to Brisbane Airport?
From Sanctuary Cove or Hope Island, the drive is typically around 50 to 55 minutes without traffic, covering roughly 60 to 70 km. Weekday peaks on the M1 and Gateway Motorway can add time, so we plan pickups with a buffer.
Can you collect me from inside a gated estate?
Yes, as long as we have the access details. Include your street address, any gate or intercom instructions and a mobile number, and your chauffeur will come to your door or meet you at the gate if you prefer.
Will my golf clubs fit?
Golf bags take up a lot of room. One golfer travelling light may fit in the Audi sedan, but for two or more golfers, or golf bags plus suitcases, the Mercedes V-Class is the better choice. Tell us how many bags you have when you book.
Can you collect guests from the marina?
Yes. Tell us the marina and the meeting point you have in mind, and include a contact number. Marina precincts can be busy, so agreeing a clear spot in advance helps.
Do you also do the trip from Brisbane Airport to Sanctuary Cove?
Yes. We track your flight details on arrival and drive you to your resort, home or vessel. Book it together with your departure transfer if you like.
