- Coolangatta to Brisbane Airport is typically around 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 25 minutes without traffic, the longest airport run on the Gold Coast.
- Brisbane Airport often makes sense when it offers the flight, timing or connection you need; Gold Coast Airport wins on convenience when it does not.
- Tweed Heads is in NSW, so from October to April your phone may show a different time from your Queensland flight.
- The whole length of the M1 lies between you and the airport, so weekday peaks deserve a generous buffer.
If you are staying in Coolangatta, Kirra or Rainbow Bay, there is an airport just up the road. So why would anyone drive more than an hour north to Brisbane? Quite often, it is because Brisbane has the flight they need. This guide is about making that decision sensibly, and then planning the longest airport run on the Gold Coast so it feels like the easiest.
Two airports, one decision
The southern Gold Coast is unusual. Gold Coast Airport sits right on the Queensland and New South Wales border, a short drive from Coolangatta and Tweed Heads. Brisbane Airport is the larger hub, further away at the other end of the motorway.
Neither is automatically the right answer. The useful question is not "which airport is closer?" but "which airport gets me where I am going, at the time I want, with the fewest compromises?" We set the factors out side by side in comparing the two airports below.
We do not keep airline schedules, so check routes and times with your airline or booking site. What we can do is help you weigh the ground side of the trip: how long the drive takes, when to leave, and what difference it makes to your day.
When Brisbane Airport is worth the drive
Brisbane Airport is generally the bigger airport, with separate domestic and international terminals. For travellers on the southern Gold Coast, the longer drive tends to make sense in situations like these:
- The route you need: your destination, or the connection you want, may only be available from Brisbane.
- The departure time: Brisbane may offer a time of day that suits your plans better.
- Fewer connections: a direct flight from Brisbane can be simpler than flying from the Gold Coast and changing elsewhere.
- Group travel: if family or colleagues are already flying from Brisbane, it may be easiest for everyone to leave from the same terminal.
- Loyalty and fares: some travellers simply find the flight they want at Brisbane. Compare the whole cost and time of the journey, including the transfer.
When Brisbane wins, a private transfer takes the sting out of the distance. Nobody has to drive the full length of the M1 after a holiday, and nobody has to collect a car from long-term parking when they get home.
When Gold Coast Airport is the better choice
Being honest about the alternative matters. For a southern Gold Coast stay, Gold Coast Airport is often the more convenient option, particularly when:
- It offers a direct flight that suits your destination and timing.
- You are flying very early and want to keep the morning as short as possible.
- You are travelling with young children, for whom an extra hour in the car makes a real difference.
- You are heading south into the Northern Rivers before or after your flight.
We provide transfers to and from Gold Coast Airport as well. If your trip continues into NSW, see our guides to Gold Coast Airport to Kingscliff and the Tweed Coast and Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay. Travellers coming the other way can read Byron Bay to Gold Coast Airport.

The drive north: timing and traffic
From Coolangatta, your chauffeur joins the M1 Pacific Motorway and heads north past Burleigh, Robina and the theme park corridor, through Logan, then onto the Gateway Motorway towards the airport. Parts of the Gateway are tolled, which your chauffeur handles. The distance is around 105 to 110 km, and in clear conditions the drive typically takes about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 25 minutes.
Because the route covers the entire length of the Gold Coast and then the southern approach to Brisbane, it is more exposed to traffic than any other Gold Coast airport run. A few planning points:
- Start with your airline's arrival advice. International flights generally need an earlier arrival at the terminal than domestic ones.
- Add the drive, using the upper end of the typical range as your baseline.
- Add a buffer for the time of day. Weekday mornings, late afternoons and the end of school holidays usually need the most.
- Add a few minutes for the pickup itself, especially from apartments with lifts and long corridors.
For a long drive like this, it pays to tell us your flight number rather than just a departure time. It lets us confirm the terminal, suggest a sensible pickup and plan around the real flight rather than a guess.
The border, Tweed Heads and daylight saving
Coolangatta has a twin town. Walk across the main street and you are in Tweed Heads, New South Wales. The two run together so seamlessly that many visitors never notice the border. That is fine for a beach holiday, but it matters for an airport run.
Queensland does not use daylight saving. NSW does, from early October to early April. During those months, Tweed Heads is an hour ahead of Coolangatta, even though they are only a street apart.
Brisbane Airport and your flight run on Queensland time. If you are staying in Tweed Heads in summer, your phone and hotel clock may show NSW time. When you book, tell us your flight time as shown on your ticket, and confirm whether your pickup time is in Queensland or NSW time.
The drive from Tweed Heads is similar to Coolangatta, at around 110 to 115 km and about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 25 minutes without traffic. Our guide to Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport covers the NSW side in more detail, and further down the coast, see Kingscliff to Brisbane Airport.
Comparing the two airports
This comparison is about the ground journey and practical trade-offs. It does not cover fares or schedules, which change and should be checked with your airline.
| Factor | Gold Coast Airport | Brisbane Airport |
|---|---|---|
| Drive from Coolangatta | Short, a few minutes in most cases | About 1 hr 20–1 hr 25 without traffic |
| Traffic exposure | Low | The full length of the M1 plus the Gateway |
| Flight choice | Check your route with your airline | Larger hub; check whether it offers your route or timing |
| Terminals | One main terminal | Separate domestic and international terminals |
| Best for | Convenience, early starts, young families | The flight you need, connections, group departures |
If the decision is close, add up the full door-to-door time for each option: transfer, check-in, flight and any connections. The airport with the longer drive sometimes gives you the shorter day overall.
It is also worth thinking about the trip home. If you fly out of Brisbane, you may well fly back into Brisbane, which means the same drive at the end of a long journey. With a private transfer booked for both legs, that return drive is simply time to rest.
Pickups along the southern beaches
The southern Gold Coast is a mix of beachfront apartment buildings, older low-rise blocks, holiday homes and hotels. Streets around Rainbow Bay, Greenmount and Kirra can be narrow and hilly, and parking near the beach is tight in summer.
When you book, include the building name, the street the entrance faces and any driveway or set-down area. If you are in a holiday home, add a house name or landmark. For apartment buildings with slow lifts, bring the bags down a few minutes before the pickup time so the car is not waiting on a busy street.
Families heading home after a southern Gold Coast holiday often have a lot of luggage. The Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven with room for suitcases, prams and boards, and child seats are available on request. The Executive Audi Sedan suits up to three passengers with standard luggage. Compare them in our fleet section.
The Mercedes van carries up to seven, with space for bags and boards.
Very early and late flights from the far south
The longer the drive, the earlier an early flight becomes. A dawn departure from Brisbane can mean a pickup in Coolangatta while the beaches are still dark. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it does change how you plan the evening before.
- Check out the night before if your hotel or apartment manager allows it, and leave keys as instructed.
- Confirm the pickup point, because some buildings lock their main entrance overnight.
- Put travel documents in one place and charge phones overnight.
- Plan breakfast for the airport rather than trying to eat before you leave.
On the plus side, the motorway before dawn is usually quiet, so the drive often sits at the quicker end of the typical range. Late-evening departures work similarly in reverse: the commuter traffic has cleared, but leave enough margin for any overnight roadworks or lane closures on the motorway. Early and late flights are available by arrangement, so book ahead.
The long drive is also a good time to rest. Many passengers simply close their eyes for the first half hour and wake up somewhere near Logan. Read what other passengers have said about travelling with us in our reviews, and see more of the region in our destinations.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Coolangatta to Brisbane Airport?
The drive is typically around 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 25 minutes without traffic, covering roughly 105 to 110 km. Because the route runs the full length of the Gold Coast on the M1, weekday peaks and holiday traffic can add considerable time.
Should I fly from Gold Coast Airport or Brisbane Airport?
If Gold Coast Airport has a flight that suits your destination and timing, its closeness is hard to beat. Brisbane Airport is worth the longer drive when it offers the route, departure time or connection you actually need. Compare the full journey, not just the flight.
Does daylight saving affect a trip from Tweed Heads?
It can. From early October to early April, NSW is an hour ahead of Queensland. Brisbane Airport and your flight run on Queensland time, so plan your Tweed Heads pickup with that difference in mind.
Can you also take me to Gold Coast Airport instead?
Yes. We provide private transfers to both airports. Tell us your flight details and we will plan the pickup for whichever airport you are flying from.
Can I get a price before I book?
Yes. You can get an instant quote online. A quote is not a confirmed booking until you complete the booking form and it is accepted.
