KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Allow around 1 hour 45 minutes from Pottsville or Hastings Point to Brisbane Airport in clear traffic, and more in holiday periods.
  • Early Brisbane flights often mean a pre-dawn pickup, especially in summer when the southern Tweed Coast runs an hour ahead of Brisbane.
  • Tell us about every bulky item, from prams to surfboards, so we send the vehicle that fits the whole load.
  • Most of the hard work for an early departure happens the evening before: packing, access notes and a confirmed pickup time.

The southern end of the Tweed Coast has a particular rhythm. Pottsville sits around its creek with a village centre and quiet streets of holiday homes; Hastings Point, a few minutes north, is a small headland settlement where the creek meets the sea. Both are places to slow down. The trouble is that the flights home do not always share that pace, and an early departure from Brisbane with a family's worth of luggage needs a plan. This guide gives you one, as a countdown.

Why departures from here start so early

From Pottsville or Hastings Point to Brisbane Airport is around 145 to 150 km. In clear traffic, the drive typically takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Add the terminal time your airline recommends and a sensible buffer, and a mid-morning flight can easily mean leaving soon after first light.

In summer there is a second factor. New South Wales observes daylight saving from early October to early April and Queensland does not, so the southern Tweed Coast is an hour ahead of Brisbane Airport. A flight printed as 7 am Queensland time is 8 am on your phone in Pottsville, but your alarm still has to ring early enough to cover the full journey. In practice, summer departures for early flights can mean a pickup while it is still dark.

Working it out

The calculation is always the same four steps, and it is the one we run when you give us your flight details:

  • Take the departure time on your booking, which is in Queensland time.
  • Subtract the terminal time your airline recommends.
  • Subtract around 1 hour 45 minutes of driving, plus a buffer that suits the day and the season.
  • From October to April, add one hour to turn that into the time on your Pottsville clock.

None of this is difficult once it is planned, and you never need to do it alone: we confirm the pickup in local time. The rest of this guide works backwards from the moment you close the front door, starting with the week before.

The countdown: a week before

The best early departures are sorted well before the last night. A week or so ahead is the right time to book your transfer and gather the details your chauffeur needs.

  • Book the transfer with your flight number, departure time and terminal (domestic or international).
  • Count the luggage honestly: suitcases, carry-on, prams, portable cots, boards and anything bought on holiday. See the luggage table below.
  • Request child seats if you need them, with each child's age.
  • Check the holiday home's departure rules: where keys go, whether bins need putting out and any checkout instructions from the owner or manager.

If your arrival at the start of the holiday also needs organising, our guide to Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers explains how meet-and-greet pickups with flight tracking work, and the same applies to the run south to Pottsville.

Luggage-heavy trips: what to tell us

Family trips to the southern Tweed Coast are often long stays in self-contained holiday homes, and that means more luggage than a hotel break. Telling us exactly what is coming lets us confirm the right vehicle and load it properly.

For one to three passengers with standard luggage, the Executive Audi Sedan is ideal. For families and groups of up to seven, or anyone with bulky items, the Executive Mercedes V-Class is the natural choice. Compare them in our fleet section.

Felix tip

If you are unsure whether everything will fit, send us a quick list rather than a guess. It is much easier to plan the right vehicle in advance than to rearrange luggage at the kerb at 5 am.

The countdown: the evening before

For an early flight, the evening before is where the morning is won or lost. Treat it as departure day, part one.

  1. Pack everything except the essentials. Suitcases zipped and lined up by the door, with only toiletries, chargers and tomorrow's clothes left out.
  2. Separate the travel bag. Passports or ID, phones, snacks for children, medications and anything needed on the plane go in one bag that stays with you.
  3. Check your clock. Confirm the pickup time in NSW time between October and April, and set alarms accordingly.
  4. Turn on an outside light. Holiday homes on quiet streets can be hard to find in the dark, and a porch light helps your chauffeur find the right door.
  5. Do the checkout jobs. Dishes, bins, fridge and anything the owner asked for, so the morning is just showering and leaving.
Good to know

Phones near the Queensland border sometimes switch time zones automatically. For an early alarm, check that your phone shows NSW time, or use a second alarm on another device.

The countdown: the morning

On the morning itself, the plan should be almost boring. Your chauffeur arrives at the agreed time, the luggage goes in, children are buckled into their seats and you leave.

The first few minutes take you from the village to the Pacific Highway, which runs close by on the inland side of Pottsville. From Hastings Point the connection is similar, a short drive inland to the highway. From there, the route heads north across the border onto the M1 Pacific Motorway, up the Gold Coast and onto the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, for the final run to the terminals.

Early mornings are usually the calmest time on the motorway heading north, although the approach towards Logan and Brisbane can still build towards the weekday morning peak. Your chauffeur checks conditions before setting off. For more on this stretch, see our guides to Coolangatta to Brisbane Airport and Gold Coast to Brisbane Airport.

Sleepy passengers

Small children often fall back asleep within minutes of leaving, which is one reason families like a private vehicle for early departures. There is no need to wake them for a transfer or change vehicles part way. Bring a small pillow or blanket if your children sleep better with one.

Holiday homes and finding the door

Much of the accommodation around Pottsville and Hastings Point is in private holiday homes and small complexes rather than large resorts. That is part of the appeal, and it also means there is no lobby or porter to meet your chauffeur. Streets are quiet and often unlit, and some homes sit behind gardens, down battle-axe driveways or among similar-looking houses.

A clear note in your booking makes all the difference: the full address, a description of the house, where to pull in and a mobile number that will be on and with you. If the property has a lockbox or specific departure instructions from the owner, finish those before the pickup time so you are not searching for a key code with the car loaded and waiting. Our destinations page shows more of the Tweed Coast towns we visit.

At Brisbane Airport

Your chauffeur drops you at departures for the terminal you need and unloads the luggage at the kerb. With a big family load, grab a trolley first and then load it, rather than carrying bags in relays. Keep the travel bag on your shoulder throughout.

If you are travelling on to an international connection, check your airline's recommended arrival time, which is usually longer than for domestic flights, and tell us when you book so the pickup reflects it.

Not flying at all? Some southern Tweed families finish a holiday with a cruise from Brisbane. The cruise terminal at Luggage Point is close to the airport, and our guide to Brisbane cruise terminal transfers explains how embarkation-day drop-offs work. Check boarding times directly with your cruise line.

Neighbouring towns and other airports

Pottsville and Hastings Point sit at the southern end of a string of coastal villages. If friends or family are staying further north, our guides to Casuarina and Cabarita Beach to Brisbane Airport and Kingscliff to Brisbane Airport explain those trips. If you are heading south instead, see New Brighton and Ocean Shores to Brisbane Airport.

Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is closer to Pottsville than Brisbane, and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is an option further south. Brisbane is often chosen for its wider range of destinations and departure times. We do not state which airlines fly where, so compare current options before you book. Our Northern Rivers to Brisbane Airport guide compares the region's airport runs in one place, and if Byron is part of your trip, the Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay guide covers that leg.

Coming the other way

The arrival direction is gentler on the alarm clock, but it has its own wrinkle: you are often landing tired after a long trip, with the same mountain of luggage. We track your flight details, so if the plane is early or late, the pickup adjusts. Your chauffeur meets you, loads the bags and drives you straight to the holiday house.

In summer, remember the hour difference in reverse. An evening landing in Brisbane means an arrival in Pottsville that is later on the local clock than you might expect, so let your holiday-home manager know your expected arrival in NSW time if they are leaving keys out. Many families book their transfer in both directions at once, so the whole trip is settled.
