Ballina sits at the mouth of the Richmond River, with Lennox Head a short way up the coast. For many Brisbane families, this is where the grandparents retired, where a sibling moved for the lifestyle, or where the holiday house is booked every summer. The drive south takes a couple of hours. With a private chauffeur, it can be the easiest part of the visit.
Who makes the trip from Brisbane to Ballina
The Brisbane to Ballina run is not mostly about tourists. In our experience, it is a family road: people heading down for a birthday, a new baby, a long weekend with parents, or a festive season gathering. There are holidaymakers too, especially those with a beach house in Lennox Head, and occasional business trips to the region.
What these trips have in common is that they often involve more than one generation. A grandparent who no longer likes long drives. Young children with car seats and snacks. Adults who would rather arrive rested than spend the first evening recovering from the M1. That is the angle of this guide.
It is also a trip people make repeatedly. Once a family has a routine, such as Christmas in Ballina every year or school holidays at the same Lennox Head rental, the same questions come up each time: when to leave, how much to pack, who sits where, and how to get home without a rushed final morning. Getting the plan right once makes every visit after it easier. You can see the other places we travel in our destinations section, and read what passengers have said in our reviews.
If you are flying in rather than starting from the city, you may prefer our guide to the Northern Rivers and Brisbane Airport, which compares every town in the region.
The route south of Byron
Most people know the first part of this drive. From Brisbane, your chauffeur joins the M1 Pacific Motorway, runs down through Logan and the full length of the Gold Coast, and crosses into New South Wales near Tweed Heads. From there the motorway becomes the Pacific Highway.
The part that is less familiar is south of Byron Bay. Most Northern Rivers traffic peels off at the Byron turn-off. Carry on, and the highway passes Bangalow in the hills, then continues south through farmland towards Ballina.
| Stage of the journey | Main road | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Brisbane to the southern Gold Coast | M1 Pacific Motorway | The busiest stretch; most of the traffic variation happens here |
| Tweed Heads and the border | M1 into the Pacific Highway | Barely noticeable on the road; the clock may change by an hour |
| Tweed to the Byron turn-off | Pacific Highway | A steady, divided highway through the Tweed and Brunswick areas |
| Byron turn-off to Ballina | Pacific Highway | Quieter country running past Bangalow towards the Richmond River |
| Into Lennox Head | Local roads to the coast | A short run off the highway to the village and the beach |
From Brisbane CBD to Ballina it is roughly 190 to 200 km, depending on where you start and finish. Lennox Head is a similar distance, just north of Ballina on the coast. Allow around two and a quarter hours in clear conditions; we cover the variables in timing and traffic below.
Timing and traffic
The motorway from Brisbane to the border carries much of South East Queensland's traffic, and that is where your time is won or lost. South of the border, the run is usually more predictable.
- Mid-morning departures tend to miss the worst of the Brisbane peak and get you to Ballina in time for lunch.
- Friday afternoons are typically the slowest time to head south, with weekend traffic leaving the city at the same time.
- School holidays and long weekends bring heavier traffic on the Gold Coast and around the coastal towns.
- Late evening is usually clear, but think about who in your group will be tired on arrival.
If a lunch or celebration is planned at the other end, tell us the local start time. We will plan the Brisbane pickup backwards from it, including the time zone change in summer.
The time difference in summer
Ballina and Lennox Head are in New South Wales, which observes daylight saving from early October to early April. Brisbane does not. For those months, your destination is an hour ahead.
It sounds minor, but it affects real plans. Leave Brisbane at 10 am in January, drive for around two and a quarter hours, and you will arrive at roughly 1.15 pm local time, not 12.15 pm. If Mum has lunch on the table at 12.30, that matters. Holiday rental check-in times and restaurant bookings are also in NSW time.
When you book, give us the local time you need to arrive and we will confirm a Brisbane pickup in Queensland time. For the return trip, we confirm your Ballina pickup in NSW time.
Door-to-door from your Brisbane home to theirs.
Making it easy for every generation
Family trips have their own logistics. A private transfer makes most of them simpler, because the car comes to you and goes exactly where you need.
Older travellers
Door-to-door means no car park walks, no shuttle connections and no long wait at a kerb. Bags are loaded and unloaded for you. If a passenger needs a little extra time getting in and out, or a front seat, just mention it. A comfort stop halfway is easy to add.
Young children
Child seats are available on request. Let us know the ages of the children when you book so the right seats are fitted before pickup. For a two-hour drive, a planned break on the Gold Coast side often helps keep everyone happy.
Collecting someone on the way
Picking up a sibling in another suburb, or a grandparent on the Gold Coast, is straightforward. Extra stops can be planned into the booking. It often works out simpler than two separate cars meeting at the other end.
If you are travelling with a large group, the Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven. See our fleet for both vehicles.
Arriving in Ballina
Ballina is a bigger town than many visitors expect, spread along the river and out towards the coast. Family homes, units and retirement communities can sit on streets that look alike, and some newer estates are still missing from older maps. A precise address saves time at the end of a long drive.
When you book, it helps to include:
- The full street address, including unit or villa number.
- Any gate codes, intercom instructions or a preferred entrance for a complex.
- A local contact number, especially if someone is waiting to meet you.
- Whether anyone will need help with steps or a longer walk from the kerb.
Your chauffeur will take you to the door and unload the bags. If you are arriving in the evening, a porch light makes a quiet street much easier to read.
Why not just drive yourself?
Plenty of people do, and it is a perfectly good road. The question is who pays the cost of the drive. Two hours or more each way, with the busiest part of the M1 at the start, is tiring for whoever is at the wheel. On a family visit, that is often the person who most wanted to relax.
A private transfer means nobody drives after a long working week, nobody worries about parking or fuel, and the whole family arrives together and rested. For parents juggling children, or adults bringing an older relative, it takes the pressure off the most stressful hours of the weekend. It is also a simple way to bring someone along who no longer drives long distances. We cover the practical reasons in more detail in the family visits section above.
Holidays in Lennox Head
Lennox Head is a different kind of destination from Ballina: a smaller coastal village with a famous headland, a long beach and a lake behind the dunes. Holiday homes here tend to be booked by the week, and the luggage reflects it.
- Surfboards, beach chairs and umbrellas.
- Prams, portable cots and bags of children's things.
- Food and supplies for the first night.
- Bikes or sporting gear, which you should mention when booking so we can confirm the fit.
For most holiday groups, the van is the right choice. If you will be flying home at the end of the stay, our Lennox Head to Brisbane Airport transfer guide covers the departure run, including how to time it around a flight.
Nearby towns and other ways to arrive
If your family is spread across the region, the same principles apply. Our guides to Byron Bay to Brisbane, Bangalow to Brisbane Airport and the original Brisbane to Byron Bay guide cover the towns a little further north.
Some relatives fly in from interstate and land somewhere other than Brisbane. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is close to town; Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta sits on the border, typically a little over an hour north of Ballina. For flyers using Brisbane, our Ballina to Brisbane Airport transfer is the reverse of this trip with a flight at the end. If they land on the Gold Coast, our Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay guide explains the border airport, and the Gold Coast to Byron Bay private transfer covers trips starting anywhere on the coast.
And if the family visit is part of a longer Queensland stay, you might combine it with a day on the Gold Coast, such as our theme park transfers for the children.
Seven seats and room for boards, prams and holiday bags.

Many families book the transfer both ways at once so the trip home is settled from the start.

The best family visits start calmly. Let someone else handle the motorway, and arrive with the energy for the people you came to see.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive from Brisbane to Ballina?
From Brisbane CBD, allow around two and a quarter hours in clear conditions for a distance of roughly 190 to 200 km. Peak-hour traffic on the M1, Friday afternoons and school holidays can all add time.
Can you pick up from our home in the suburbs rather than the CBD?
Yes. This is a private door-to-door transfer, so we collect from your home, hotel or office anywhere in Brisbane and drop off at the exact address in Ballina or Lennox Head.
Can we collect a relative on the way?
Yes. Extra pickups and stops can be added on request. Tell us the addresses when you book so the timing and quote reflect the full trip.
Is there a time difference between Brisbane and Ballina?
From early October to early April, NSW observes daylight saving and Queensland does not, so Ballina is an hour ahead of Brisbane. Outside those months, both use the same time.
Can we book the return trip at the same time?
Yes. Many passengers book Brisbane to Ballina and the return together. If you are flying out afterwards, our Ballina to Brisbane Airport transfer can be booked in the same way.
