Most of our Northern Rivers articles are written for visitors. This one is written for locals. New Brighton, Ocean Shores and South Golden Beach sit on the coast between Brunswick Heads and the Tweed, a stretch of quiet residential streets, holiday homes, beach access tracks and the Marshalls Creek and Brunswick River waterways nearby. People live here for the lifestyle, and many still need to fly from Brisbane on a regular basis. Here is how residents make that airport run a routine rather than a chore.

Living here, flying from Brisbane

Ocean Shores is the larger residential community, set back from the beach among leafy streets and waterways, while New Brighton and South Golden Beach are smaller settlements right on the coast. Between them is a mix of permanent residents, people who work remotely, retirees and holiday-home owners who come and go through the year.

What they have in common is distance from the big airport. Brisbane is around 160 to 165 km away, and in clear traffic the drive typically takes about 1 hour 50 to 55 minutes. That is a long way to drive yourself before a flight, and a longer way after one, which is why so many locals hand the job to a chauffeur. The trip types are fairly predictable, as the regular trip types table below shows.

Regular trip types

Residents' airport bookings tend to fall into a handful of patterns. Each benefits from slightly different details at the time of booking.

TripUsual vehicleUseful to tell us
Solo business tripExecutive Audi SedanFlight number, terminal, return flight
Couple's holidayExecutive Audi SedanLuggage count, return date and flight
Family trip awayExecutive Mercedes V-ClassChild ages for seats, prams, extra bags
Collecting visitorsSedan or van, by group sizeTheir flight number, mobility needs, luggage

The Executive Audi Sedan carries up to three passengers with standard luggage. The Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven, with room for bulky items. Child seats are available on request. Compare both in our fleet.

The business traveller's run

For residents who travel for work, the airport transfer is often the first part of the working day. A quiet cabin, a smooth motorway and nearly two hours without having to watch the road is useful time: for calls, a last look at a presentation or simply some rest before a long day.

A few habits make regular business trips easier:

  • Book both directions at once. When your return flight is known, add it at the time of booking. You land knowing the car is coming.
  • Share flight numbers, not just times. We track your flight details, so a delay or early landing is handled without a phone call from the gate.
  • Use the apps. Our apps keep your bookings in one place, which helps when you travel often.
  • Mention a second stop. Collecting a colleague on the way, in Brunswick Heads or on the Gold Coast, is easy to add in advance.
Felix tip

If your diary is in NSW time but your meetings are in Brisbane, double-check calendar invitations between October and April. A meeting set for 9 am Brisbane time is 10 am on a phone still set to Ocean Shores time.

The clock, from a resident's point of view

Visitors notice the time difference once. Residents live with it for half the year. New South Wales observes daylight saving from early October to early April, while Queensland does not. In those months, New Brighton and Ocean Shores run an hour ahead of Brisbane Airport.

That affects airport runs in two ways. Departure times on your boarding pass are in Queensland time, so your pickup needs to be worked out and then converted. And on the way home, you lose an hour: land in Brisbane in the evening and it is later than you think by the time you reach the front door.

When you give us your flight number, we confirm the pickup in local NSW time. That is one less thing to calculate before an early start.

Good to know

Phones close to the Queensland border sometimes switch to Queensland time automatically. Whether or not it has happened to you before, on an early-flight morning it is worth checking your phone's time zone setting before relying on its alarm.

The route north

From Ocean Shores and New Brighton, the Pacific Highway is close by, so your chauffeur is on the main road north within a few minutes. The route runs up past the Tweed, crosses into Queensland and joins the M1 Pacific Motorway along the Gold Coast, before switching to the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, for the final run to the domestic or international terminal.

Most of the time variation is on the M1 from the northern Gold Coast through Logan, especially in weekday peaks, on Friday afternoons and in school holidays. We check conditions before departure and plan a buffer that suits the day. If you have ever driven it yourself after a long-haul flight, you will know why handing over the wheel is appealing.

The same corridor serves the whole far north coast, so its patterns are well known. Our guides to Tweed Heads to Brisbane Airport and Gold Coast to Brisbane Airport describe the busier northern half of the trip in more detail.

Neighbours to the north will recognise the same highway in our Pottsville and Hastings Point to Brisbane Airport guide, and those just south across the river have their own Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads to Brisbane Airport guide. For the Tweed Coast villages, see Casuarina and Cabarita Beach to Brisbane Airport.

Collecting family and friends

One of the most common bookings from this area is not for residents at all. It is for their visitors. Parents flying in from interstate, adult children home for the holidays, friends coming to stay: someone has to meet them at Brisbane, and a round trip of close to four hours is a big ask.

We handle it the same way as any arrival. Give us the flight number and arrival time, and we track the flight. The chauffeur meets your guests at the airport, helps with luggage and drives them door to door to your home. You can stay put, have dinner ready and save yourself the drive.

  1. Book with their flight details, including the terminal if you know it.
  2. Share a mobile number for the guest, so the chauffeur can make contact on arrival.
  3. Mention any mobility needs, such as a walking frame or a wheelchair that folds, so we can plan.
  4. Add the return trip if their departure date is known.

Our Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers guide explains how airport meet-and-greet pickups work in more detail, and Brisbane Airport to Byron Bay covers the longer run south that your guests will take.

Driving yourself versus being driven

Most residents own a car, so the real question is whether to drive to Brisbane Airport or be driven. We do not quote prices in articles, because they depend on the details, but the practical comparison is clear enough:

  • Driving yourself means around two hours each way, finding a space and paying for airport parking, then driving home tired after the flight.
  • Being dropped by family means asking someone to give up most of a day, twice.
  • A private transfer means a door-to-door trip on your schedule, with time to work or rest, and no car to collect at the end.

To compare for a specific trip, get an instant quote and weigh it against your own costs. A quote is not a confirmed booking until it is accepted.

For holiday-home owners

Not everyone with an address here lives here full time. Many homes in New Brighton, South Golden Beach and Ocean Shores belong to owners who split the year between this coast and somewhere else, often flying in and out of Brisbane several times a year.

For owners, the arrival trip is usually the one that matters most. You land with a suitcase, perhaps groceries to buy and a house that has been closed up for weeks. A few things help:

  • Plan for the clock. Between October and April you lose an hour heading south, as explained in the clock, from a resident's point of view, so an afternoon landing can mean arriving close to dusk.
  • Add a stop. A quick stop for supplies on the way can be built into the booking if you tell us in advance.
  • Leave access notes. If a neighbour or property manager is leaving keys, include the arrangement so the chauffeur can wait while you collect them.

Departures work the other way: house locked, bins out, and the car at the door at the agreed time, so the last job is simply getting in.

Other airports nearby

Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport are both closer to New Brighton and Ocean Shores than Brisbane, and plenty of locals use them. Brisbane tends to be the choice when it offers a wider range of destinations, departure times or international connections. We do not state which airlines fly where, as schedules change, so compare the options when you book flights. We are happy to take you to whichever airport suits.

For a side-by-side look at the region's airport runs, our Northern Rivers to Brisbane Airport guide is a good starting point. If you are heading out on a cruise rather than a flight, the Brisbane cruise terminal transfers guide explains the terminal near the airport. And for the times you are a visitor yourself, the Brisbane to Byron Bay private transfer guide covers the classic coastal run.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

How long does the drive from Ocean Shores to Brisbane Airport take?

In clear conditions it typically takes around 1 hour 50 to 55 minutes, covering roughly 160 to 165 km. Weekday peaks on the M1 and holiday traffic can add time, so we plan pickups with a buffer.

I fly out of Brisbane regularly. Can I book the same transfer each time?

Yes. Many residents book their airport runs as a matter of routine. Booking online or through our apps keeps your address and preferences handy, and you can add the return trip at the same time.

Can you collect my visiting parents from Brisbane Airport and bring them to Ocean Shores?

Yes. Give us their flight number and arrival time, and we track the flight, meet them at the airport and drive them door to door. Let us know about mobility needs or extra luggage when booking.

Is it better to drive and park at the airport?

It depends on your trip. Driving yourself means a long drive each way, finding parking and paying for it, plus driving home tired after a flight. A private transfer removes those tasks; request a quote to compare for your own trip.

Do you also go to Gold Coast or Ballina airports?

Yes. Both are closer to New Brighton and Ocean Shores than Brisbane, and we can take you to whichever suits your flight. Brisbane is often chosen for its wider range of destinations and departure times.
