Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads are close neighbours with different personalities. Mullumbimby is a hinterland town at the foot of Mount Chincogan, surrounded by farms, rainforest valleys and retreats tucked into the hills. Brunswick Heads sits a short drive away where the Brunswick River meets the sea, a small, unhurried river-mouth town with a strong local character. Both are a short hop from Byron Bay, and many visitors stay in one while spending time in the other. This guide covers the trip north to Brisbane Airport, and how to fit Byron into the plan.
Two towns, three kinds of departure
In our experience, passengers leaving this part of the Northern Rivers usually fall into one of three groups, and each needs a slightly different plan.
- Retreat guests: people finishing a stay at a wellness, yoga or creative retreat in the hills, often with a set program end time and a property that is not easy to find.
- River-mouth holidaymakers: families and couples who have spent a week in Brunswick Heads, often with beach and river gear.
- Split-stay travellers: visitors who have combined the Brunswick Valley with nights in Byron Bay, and want one smooth trip that ties it together.
We look at each below, starting with retreat departures, which tend to need the most planning.
Leaving a hinterland retreat
The hills and valleys around Mullumbimby are home to a range of retreats, guesthouses and rural stays. They are chosen for their peace and seclusion, which is exactly what makes them tricky for a first-time visitor to reach in the dark.
Access and directions
Rural properties can involve unsealed roads, steep or narrow driveways, gates and creek crossings. Navigation apps do not always take you to the right entrance. When you book, include the full address, the property's own directions if it provides them, and any gate codes or instructions about where to wait.
Phone signal
Mobile coverage in some valleys is patchy. Agree a clear pickup point and time in advance, so your chauffeur is not relying on a call that will not connect. If the retreat has a landline or a reception area, mention it.
Program end times
Retreat programs often finish at a set time, sometimes with a closing session that runs a little over. If your flight allows, give yourself a margin between the end of the program and the pickup, rather than rushing from the closing circle into the car.
Ask the retreat for the exact pickup location before you arrive, not on the last morning. Many have a preferred spot for vehicles, such as a car park near the main house, and knowing it in advance keeps the departure calm.
Brunswick Heads departures
Brunswick Heads is easier to navigate than the hills, with a compact town centre near the river and holiday accommodation spread through the surrounding streets. Pickups are straightforward with a full address and unit number.
The one thing to watch is the busy season. During school holidays and long weekends, the town fills up and streets near the river and beach get crowded with parked cars and pedestrians. If your accommodation is on a narrow street, suggest a convenient spot nearby for loading, or ask your host whether there is off-street space the car can use for a few minutes.
What Brunswick holidays do generate is gear. Fishing rods, paddleboards, bodyboards and sandy beach bags are common, along with family luggage. If you are travelling with bulky items, the Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven with room for the extras. For one to three passengers with standard suitcases, the Executive Audi Sedan is a quiet, comfortable choice. You can compare both in our fleet, and child seats are available on request.
From Brunswick Heads, the Pacific Highway is only a short drive away, so you are on the main road north within minutes. Neighbours a little further north in New Brighton and Ocean Shores have similar timing, as our New Brighton and Ocean Shores to Brisbane Airport guide explains.
Combining your trip with Byron Bay
Byron Bay is a short drive south of Brunswick Heads, and many visitors move between the two. A private transfer handles that easily, and there are a few common patterns.
| Plan | How it works | Timing note |
|---|---|---|
| Split stay | Nights in Byron, then the Brunswick Valley, then the airport | Book the Byron-to-Brunswick leg and airport run together |
| Last lunch in Byron | Pickup in Mullumbimby, stop in Byron, then north to Brisbane | Byron is the opposite direction, so allow extra time |
| Collect a friend | Second pickup in Byron before heading north | Give both addresses when booking |
| Hourly day | Chauffeur stays with you for a set period before the airport | Suits late flights and several stops |
For an outline of the drive and town arrivals in Byron itself, see our Byron Bay to Brisbane Airport guide and the original Brisbane to Byron Bay private transfer article. If you started your trip by flying into the Gold Coast, our Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay guide covers that arrival.
Byron's town centre can be slow in busy periods, and parking is limited. A private transfer drops you at the door and waits or returns as arranged, so a final Byron stop does not mean circling the block looking for a space.

A slower goodbye: using the last day
People who come to this corner of the Northern Rivers usually come to slow down, and it seems a shame to spend the final day watching the clock. If your flight leaves Brisbane in the evening, the day can be a gentle wind-down rather than a waiting game.
With an hourly or as-directed booking, your chauffeur collects you and your luggage in the morning and stays with you until the airport. A few ideas our passengers enjoy:
- A wander in Mullumbimby: the town centre has cafes and local shops, and the backdrop of Mount Chincogan makes for an easy final photo.
- Riverside time in Brunswick Heads: a walk along the river or a last swim, with wet gear bagged before it meets the suitcases.
- A stop in Byron: lunch or a look at the lighthouse headland, as set out in combining your trip with Byron Bay.
- A break on the Gold Coast: splitting the long drive north with a coastal stop part way.
Your luggage stays secure in the vehicle throughout, so there is no need to find storage or carry bags around. Check opening hours directly with any venue you plan to visit, and tell us your rough plan when you book so the timing and quote reflect it. You can see more places we travel to in our destinations.
The drive north and the clock
From Mullumbimby or Brunswick Heads, Brisbane Airport is around 160 to 170 km. In clear traffic, allow about 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours. The route is simple: the Pacific Highway north past the Tweed, across the border onto the M1 Pacific Motorway, along the Gold Coast, and onto the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, to the terminals.
Most of the variation is on the M1 from the northern Gold Coast through Logan, especially in weekday peaks, on Friday afternoons and in school holidays. Your chauffeur checks conditions before leaving and plans a buffer around them.
The clock is the other consideration. The Brunswick Valley is in New South Wales, which observes daylight saving from early October to early April. Brisbane Airport, in Queensland, does not. In those months, your retreat's closing session, your checkout time and your phone are all in NSW time, while your boarding pass is in Queensland time. Here is how we plan it:
- Take your flight's departure time in Queensland time.
- Subtract the terminal time your airline recommends.
- Subtract the drive, around two hours, plus a buffer for the day and any stops.
- Between October and April, add an hour to give the pickup time in NSW time.
Give us your flight number when you book and we will confirm the pickup in local time, so the conversion is done for you.
Brisbane, Gold Coast or Ballina?
Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads sit between two regional airports, and both are closer than Brisbane. Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is to the north, and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is to the south. Brisbane is the bigger hub and is often chosen for its wider range of destinations, departure times and international connections. We do not state which airlines fly where, as schedules change, so compare the current options before you book.
Whichever airport suits your flight, we can take you there. For a wider look at the region's airport choices, read our Northern Rivers to Brisbane Airport guide. If you are staying a little further inland, see our Bangalow to Brisbane Airport guide, and for the Tweed Valley, Murwillumbah to Brisbane Airport.
Arriving from Brisbane
Many retreat guests and holidaymakers book the arrival leg as well. We track your flight details and adjust to an early or late landing, meet you at the airport and drive you directly to your accommodation. For retreats, it is worth checking the property's arrival window, as some prefer guests to arrive by a certain time to settle in before the program begins.
Remember that in summer you lose an hour heading south. An afternoon landing in Brisbane can mean arriving in the Brunswick Valley around dusk on the local clock, which is worth knowing if the last stretch is a rural road. For the general arrival process, our Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers guide explains how meet-and-greet pickups work, and Brisbane Airport to Byron Bay covers the full run south.
Book both directions together and the whole trip is settled.
Booking your Brunswick Valley transfer
Booking online takes a few minutes. Enter your Mullumbimby or Brunswick Heads address, or your retreat's details, along with your flight number, passengers, luggage and any stops such as Byron. You can book your transfer straight away, or get an instant quote first. A quote is not a confirmed booking until it is accepted.
For longer or more complex days, ask about hourly and as-directed bookings in our chauffeur services. You can see the service areas we cover across the border, find answers in our FAQ and read passenger feedback in our reviews. However you leave the valley, the drive north can be as peaceful as the stay.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Mullumbimby to Brisbane Airport?
In clear conditions it typically takes around 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours, covering roughly 160 to 170 km. Holiday traffic and weekday peaks on the M1 can add time, so we plan pickups with a buffer.
Can you collect us from a retreat in the hills behind Mullumbimby?
Yes. Rural properties are part of our regular work. Send the full address, gate details and any directions from the retreat, and mention if the last stretch is unsealed so we can plan the timing.
Can we stop in Byron Bay on the way to the airport?
Yes. A detour south to Byron for a final lunch or to collect a friend can be added. Byron is in the opposite direction to Brisbane, so allow extra time and let us know when you book so the plan and quote reflect it.
Is there a closer airport than Brisbane?
Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport are both closer. Brisbane is often chosen for its wider range of destinations and departure times. We can take you to whichever suits your flight.
What time should we leave for a Brisbane flight in summer?
From October to April, the Brunswick Valley is an hour ahead of Brisbane. Give us your flight number and departure time and we will confirm the pickup in local NSW time, allowing for the drive and a buffer.
