- Allow around two hours or a little more from Byron Bay to Brisbane Airport on a clear road, then add a traffic buffer and your airline's check-in time.
- Brisbane flight times are in Queensland time, so from early October to early April your Byron clock reads an hour later than your boarding pass.
- Weekday morning traffic heading north on the M1 is the most common cause of delay on this run.
- Book your pickup by working backwards from the time you need to be at the terminal, not forwards from when you would like to leave.
A flight out of Brisbane is often the last thing on a Byron holiday, and it is the one part with no flexibility. The drive is around two hours, the clocks can disagree by an hour, and the M1 has its own ideas on a weekday morning. This guide is about one question: what time should your car arrive in Byron? Get that right and the rest takes care of itself.
Why this run needs a little planning
Byron Bay to Brisbane Airport is around 175 to 180 km and typically takes about two hours to two hours and ten minutes on a clear road. That sounds simple, but three things make it different from a city airport transfer.
- The distance: a two-hour drive leaves more room for something to go wrong than a 20-minute one. A single incident on the M1 can cost real time.
- The border: for half the year, Byron and Brisbane run on different clocks. See NSW vs Queensland time below.
- The direction: heading north towards Brisbane in the morning means travelling with the commuter traffic, not against it.
None of this is a reason to worry. It is a reason to plan backwards from your flight, which is exactly what we do when you book. If you are arriving into Byron rather than leaving, our guide to the Brisbane Airport to Byron Bay transfer covers the inbound trip.
Working backwards from your flight
The most reliable way to set a pickup time is to start at the airport and work back to your front door. Here is the sequence we use.
- Find your terminal deadline. Check your airline's recommended arrival or bag-drop time for your flight. International departures generally need more time than domestic.
- Convert it to Byron time if needed. Between early October and early April, add an hour to the Queensland time to get the Byron clock time.
- Subtract the drive. Allow around two hours to two hours and ten minutes from central Byron. Add a little if you are staying in the hinterland or out of town.
- Add a traffic buffer. More on weekday mornings, Friday afternoons and at the end of school holidays. See M1 morning traffic.
- Add loading time. A few minutes for luggage, a family, or a hinterland driveway.
The result is your pickup time in NSW time. It will almost always be earlier than people expect, and that is fine. Arriving with time to spare at Brisbane Airport is far more pleasant than watching the clock on the Gateway Motorway.
Staying outside the town centre
Not everyone stays in central Byron. Hinterland homes towards Bangalow or Federal, beach houses at Suffolk Park and properties off quiet rural roads all add time before the car reaches the Pacific Highway. Some sit at the end of narrow lanes or long gravel driveways where a careful approach takes a few extra minutes.
If you are staying in one of these places, tell us the full address and any access notes. We will factor the extra distance into your pickup time rather than discovering it on the morning. If you are further north around Mullumbimby or Brunswick Heads, our Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads to Brisbane Airport guide covers that start point.
Give us your flight number and departure time exactly as they appear on your ticket. We will do the time-zone conversion and suggest a pickup, so nobody in your group has to do the maths on the last night of the holiday.
NSW vs Queensland time on your flight booking
This is the trap that catches the most travellers. Queensland does not use daylight saving; NSW does, from early October to early April. During those months, Byron Bay is an hour ahead of Brisbane.
Your flight from Brisbane is shown in Queensland time, because that is local time at the airport. Your phone, your accommodation and your Byron restaurant bookings are all in NSW time. It is easy to read "departs 1.00 pm" on a boarding pass and mentally plan around 1 pm in Byron, which is actually noon in Brisbane. That gives you an hour less than you think.
A worked example
Say it is January and your airline asks you to be at the terminal by 11.30 am. That is Queensland time, which is 12.30 pm in Byron. Working back around two hours and ten minutes for the drive, plus a buffer, a pickup at around 9.45 am Byron time would be a sensible starting point. Read the boarding pass as if it were Byron time and you would leave an hour late.
Phones near the border can switch between time zones depending on the network they connect to. If your alarm is set for the pickup, double-check it is set in NSW time, and treat your flight time as Queensland time.
From early April to early October, both states share the same time and the conversion step disappears. The same trap applies at the Gold Coast, which our Byron Bay to Gold Coast Airport transfer guide explains for the shorter run to Coolangatta.
We will set your Byron pickup time from your flight details.
Morning traffic on the M1
For most flights, the drive itself is predictable until the car reaches the Gold Coast. From there, the M1 carries commuters heading north to Brisbane, and weekday mornings are when that traffic is heaviest.
- Pre-dawn departures: for early flights, a very early pickup usually means quieter roads all the way to the Gateway Motorway.
- Weekday morning peak: the northern Gold Coast and Logan stretches of the M1 can slow considerably. Allow a larger buffer for mid-morning flights.
- Late morning to early afternoon: often the smoothest window once the peak has passed.
- Afternoon and evening flights: the afternoon build-up on the M1 starts earlier than many expect, especially on Fridays.
Your chauffeur checks conditions before leaving and adjusts the route where sensible. The final leg uses the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections; that is all handled for you.
Domestic or international terminal
Brisbane Airport's domestic and international terminals are separate buildings, a short drive apart. When you book, include your flight number and tell us which terminal you need.
International departures generally ask for earlier arrival, which pushes your Byron pickup earlier still. For long-haul flights, it is worth considering whether a night closer to the airport suits your group better than a pre-dawn start from Byron. Our guide to Gold Coast to Brisbane Airport transfers may help if you are breaking the journey on the coast.
If your group is on different flights, perhaps one domestic and one international, mention it at booking. Dropping at both terminals is straightforward, but the earlier deadline sets the pickup time for everyone, and we will plan the order of drop-offs so nobody is cutting it fine.
Early flights and pre-dawn pickups
Early morning departures are common from Brisbane, and they mean a very early start from Byron. A few practical points make that easier.
- Pack the night before and leave bags by the door.
- Let your accommodation know you are leaving early, especially if there is a gate or a key drop.
- Tell us about sleeping children so we can have child seats fitted and ready.
Early and late flights are arranged on request. The car is quiet and comfortable, so many passengers simply sleep until the airport comes into view.
One more consideration for early departures is the time conversion. A 6 am Brisbane flight in summer is 7 am in Byron, but your terminal deadline and the two-hour drive still push the pickup well before dawn on a Byron clock. Working it through with us at booking avoids any confusion when the alarm goes off.
Luggage, groups and the right vehicle
Departure day often means more bags than arrival day. Choose the vehicle with the return luggage in mind, not the luggage you arrived with.
The Executive Audi Sedan carries up to three passengers with standard suitcases. The Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven, with room for surfboards, prams and oversized items. Compare both in our fleet, and mention unusual items when you get an instant quote. Wedding parties leaving Byron together often book the van so the whole group arrives at the terminal at once.
The Mercedes van takes up to seven passengers and their luggage.
Planning factors at a glance
Use this table as a checklist when you set your pickup time. We have not included specific times or prices because they depend on your flight, the day and your address.
| Factor | What to check | Effect on your pickup |
|---|---|---|
| Airline arrival time | Your airline's recommendation for your flight | Sets the deadline you work back from |
| Time zone | Is it between early October and early April? | If so, add an hour to get Byron time |
| Drive time | Around 2 hr to 2 hr 10 min from central Byron | Add more for hinterland addresses |
| Day and hour | Weekday morning, Friday or holiday period? | Allow a larger traffic buffer |
| Terminal | Domestic or international | International usually means earlier |
When another airport might suit you
Brisbane is not the only option from Byron. Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is typically around 50 to 60 minutes away, and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is closer again. Which is best depends on your destination and the flights available. Brisbane generally offers the widest choice of connections, including international flights.
Our guide to Ballina to Brisbane Airport transfers compares the regional airport with Brisbane honestly, and the Northern Rivers to Brisbane Airport guide covers the wider region. If you are flying into Coolangatta at the start of your trip, see Gold Coast Airport to Byron Bay transfers.
Booking your Byron Bay to Brisbane Airport transfer
To book your transfer, enter your Byron address, flight number and departure time, passenger numbers, luggage and any child seats. You can also get an instant quote first; a quote is not a confirmed booking until it is accepted. Frequently asked questions
How early should I leave Byron Bay for a Brisbane flight?
Start with the time your airline wants you at the terminal, then allow around two hours or a little more for the drive, plus a buffer for traffic. On weekday mornings and at the end of school holidays the buffer should be more generous. We will suggest a pickup time when you book.
Is my Brisbane flight time in NSW or Queensland time?
Flight times departing Brisbane are shown in local Queensland time. From early October to early April Byron Bay is an hour ahead, so a 2 pm departure from Brisbane is 3 pm on a Byron clock. Always give us your flight time exactly as it appears on your booking.
Can you pick up for a very early flight?
Yes, early and late flights can be arranged. Pre-dawn pickups from Byron are common for morning departures, and an early start also tends to avoid the worst of the northbound morning traffic on the M1.
Do you go to both the domestic and international terminals?
Yes. The terminals at Brisbane Airport are separate, so tell us your flight number and which terminal you need. Your chauffeur will drop you at the departures area for your flight.
What if my flight is delayed or changed?
Let us know as soon as you hear about a change. If your new departure time affects your pickup, we will adjust where we can. Remember that a quote is not a confirmed booking, so make sure your transfer is booked once your flight is set.
