KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • We track your flight details, so an early or late landing at Brisbane Airport does not leave you stranded or rushing.
  • Long-haul international arrivals take time to clear the terminal, so your Byron arrival estimate should start from when you are through, not touchdown.
  • Families, surfers and wedding groups should mention child seats, board lengths and outfits at booking so the right vehicle is ready.
  • Hinterland venues and retreats often have rural addresses; send exact directions and remember that Byron runs an hour ahead from October to April.

You have just stepped off a plane at Brisbane Airport, and Byron Bay is still a couple of hours away. Whether you have flown in from overseas, from another capital or with three children and a quiver of surfboards, the last thing you want is to work out a hire car or a bus timetable. This guide is about the arrival side of the trip: what happens when you land, how your chauffeur finds you, and how to plan the drive south for your group.

Before you fly: what to send us

A smooth arrival starts with good booking details. The more we know before you take off, the less there is to sort out at the kerb.

  • Flight number and date: this is what lets us track your arrival.
  • Passenger numbers: including children and their ages.
  • Luggage: suitcases, prams, surfboards, golf clubs, instruments or anything bulky.
  • Destination address: the exact Byron or hinterland address, plus any gate codes or access notes.
  • Stops: anything you would like on the way, such as groceries for a holiday house.

With that information we can choose the right vehicle and plan the timing. If you prefer to see the cost before deciding, you can get an instant quote; a quote is not a confirmed booking until it is accepted.

How flight tracking works for you

Flights do not always land on time. Headwinds, tailwinds and delays at the departure airport all move the arrival, sometimes by a lot. That is why we track your flight details rather than relying on the scheduled time.

If your flight lands early, your chauffeur is ready. If it is late, your pickup moves with it, and you are not paying for a car to wait in a holding pattern of its own. If the flight is cancelled or rebooked, send us the new details and we will rearrange things.

Felix tip

Switch your phone on as soon as you land and keep it on. If anything changes, such as a long wait at the baggage carousel, a quick message lets your chauffeur plan the pickup point and timing.

Meeting your chauffeur at the terminal

Brisbane Airport has separate domestic and international terminals, a short drive apart. Your flight number tells us which one you are arriving at, but if you are connecting from an international flight onto a domestic one, mention it so there is no confusion about where you will finish.

Arrivals areas at a busy airport can feel hectic, particularly when several flights land together. Check your booking confirmation for the meeting arrangements and keep your phone on, so your chauffeur can reach you and you are not left scanning the kerb. Once you have your bags, it is a short walk to the car, and your luggage is loaded for you.

If your group is arriving on different flights, perhaps a couple from Sydney and friends from overseas, let us know both flight numbers. We can plan a single pickup once everyone has landed, or arrange separate cars if the gap between arrivals is long. The first-time arrival details in our Gold Coast arrivals guide apply here too.

  • Domestic arrivals: usually a quicker walk from the aircraft to the kerb.
  • International arrivals: allow for border and biosecurity processing; see long-haul arrivals below.
  • Connecting passengers: give us the final flight into Brisbane, not the first leg.

Long-haul international arrivals

After a long-haul flight, the time between touchdown and the kerb can be considerable. Passport control, baggage collection, and customs and biosecurity screening all happen before you reach the arrivals hall, and queues vary from day to day.

That is worth keeping in mind when you estimate your Byron arrival. Start from when you expect to be through the terminal, then add a drive of around two hours to two hours and ten minutes on a clear road. Your chauffeur tracks the flight and plans around your real progress, so there is no need to rush.

The time difference on top of jet lag

From early October to early April, Byron Bay is an hour ahead of Brisbane because NSW observes daylight saving and Queensland does not. Land at Brisbane at 7 am Queensland time and it is already 8 am in Byron. Factor this into accommodation check-in times, which are set in NSW time.

Good to know

Many Byron properties have a set check-in time later in the day. If you are arriving early on an overnight flight, ask your accommodation about early check-in or bag storage, or consider a breakfast stop on the way. Read more in on the drive south.

Arriving with children

Travelling with young children turns an airport arrival into a logistical exercise. A private transfer removes several of the hard parts: no car-seat fitting in a hire car park, no shuttle stops, and no waiting with tired children at a bus bay.

  1. Request child seats when you book and give the ages of each child. Seats are fitted before your chauffeur reaches the airport.
  2. Mention the pram so it is counted in the luggage space.
  3. Plan a break if you need one. Two hours is a long stretch for small children after a flight. A short stop on the Gold Coast is easy to add.
  4. Choose the van for bigger families. The Executive Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven, with space for the bags that come with children.

Some families split their trip, spending a few days on the Gold Coast before heading to Byron. If that is your plan, our Brisbane Airport to Gold Coast transfers guide and our Gold Coast theme park transfers cover the first leg, and the Gold Coast to Byron Bay private transfer covers the second.

Surfboards and bulky gear

Byron draws surfers, and surfers travel with boards. Boards, along with bike boxes, golf bags and musical instruments, need planning rather than hope.

The Executive Mercedes V-Class is the vehicle for this. Tell us how many boards you have and their approximate length, along with the rest of the group's luggage, and we will confirm the setup works. Very long boards or several board bags may limit seating, so it is better to discuss it at booking than at the kerb. The Executive Audi Sedan suits up to three passengers with standard suitcases rather than oversized gear. Compare both in our fleet.

Weddings and retreats in the Byron hinterland

A large share of Brisbane Airport to Byron trips are not to Byron town at all. The hinterland, around villages like Bangalow, Federal and Newrybar and the green hills behind them, is home to wedding venues, wellness retreats and private properties.

Finding rural addresses

Hinterland properties are often reached by narrow roads, unsealed sections and driveways that look much like the neighbours'. Mobile reception can be patchy in places. Send us the exact address, the property name, any gate codes and the directions the venue provides. Your chauffeur will review the route before you land.

Wedding guests and bridal parties

Wedding groups often fly in together. The van keeps guests and garment bags together, and an hourly or as-directed booking can cover moves between accommodation and venues later in the weekend. Coordinate the timing with your venue, and remember their schedule is in NSW time.

Retreat arrivals

For a retreat, the transfer is the start of the reset. Many guests prefer a quiet drive with no rush, and a private car means you can arrive calmly rather than by shuttle at a set hour.

Retreats often have a preferred arrival window so that guests can settle in before the first session. Let us know that window when you book, together with your flight, and we will tell you honestly whether it is realistic. If the timing is tight after an international arrival, it is better to know before you fly than to arrive stressed.

On the drive south

From the airport, your chauffeur takes the Gateway Motorway, which has tolled sections, to the M1, then runs south through the Gold Coast, crosses into NSW near Tweed Heads and continues on the Pacific Highway. The full route and classic scenic stops are described in our Brisbane to Byron Bay private transfer guide, so we will not repeat them here.

What matters for arriving passengers is pacing. If you have just come off a long flight, a coffee break can make the drive more comfortable. If you are going straight to a holiday house, a grocery stop on the way into Byron saves going out again. Both are easy to add when you book your transfer.

Traffic heading south from the airport is often lighter in the morning than the northbound commuter flow, but afternoon arrivals can meet a busy M1 through Logan and the Gold Coast, particularly on Fridays and at the start of school holidays. Your chauffeur checks conditions before you land and adjusts where sensible.

For a rough Byron arrival time, take the moment you expect to be in the car, add around two hours to two hours and ten minutes, then add an hour on the clock between early October and early April. Hinterland addresses take a little longer than Byron town. If you are staying north of Byron, our guides to New Brighton and Ocean Shores and Kingscliff cover those shorter runs.

Booking and the return trip

Most passengers book the return at the same time. The Byron Bay to Brisbane Airport transfer guide explains how to set a departure pickup, including the time-zone trap on flight bookings. If your next flight leaves from Coolangatta instead, read the Byron Bay to Gold Coast Airport transfer guide, and compare it with arriving via Gold Coast Airport for future trips.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my flight into Brisbane is delayed?

We track your flight details, so your pickup moves with your actual arrival rather than the scheduled time. If your flight is changed or cancelled entirely, let us know so we can rearrange the transfer.

How long after an international flight should I expect to leave the airport?

It varies with passport control, baggage and biosecurity screening, and can take a while after a long-haul flight. Because we track the flight, your chauffeur plans around your real arrival. The drive to Byron is then typically around two hours or a little more.

Can we bring surfboards?

Yes, in the Executive Mercedes V-Class, which has room for boards and extra luggage. Tell us how many boards and roughly how long they are when you book, so we can confirm they will fit with your group.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes, child seats are available on request. Let us know the number and ages of the children when you book so the seats are fitted before your chauffeur arrives at the airport.

Can you take us to a wedding venue or retreat in the hinterland?

Yes. We travel to private properties, venues and retreats throughout the Byron hinterland. Send the exact address and any directions or gate details, as rural properties can be hard to find.
